The Flood Tragedy in South Eastern Kentucky

As I look at posts from my friends and family I grew up around surfacing on social media, I am horrified by the destruction Mother Nature has formed. I know everyone is acting like this force of nature never happens down there, but my papaw told me about how his dad lost his entire family to a flood before my papaw was born. He said it happened in the 1930s and so many lives were lost.

The last time I visited South Eastern Kentucky, majority of the places I knew were gone or abandoned. Time destroys everything. I feel that when I visit there again, I'm not going to recognize the area at all.

I'm still in shock with how bad the area looked prior. I can only imagine how it will look once they start to rebuild. I hope their governor actually gets the help they need.

I'm looking at pictures of roads I've walked and road on. Buildings I've been in, and it is hard to grasp my head around it. These places that when I was a child that looked like fortresses or prisons are now realistically prisons for these people due to a natural disaster.

Please if you have friends or family members that haven't reached out or your haven't seen them posting their normal social media posts. Check in on them, call the Kentucky State Police if you have to. Facebook has a check-in spot as well. A lot of my friends and family have already used it.

I may not have always liked living down there, but it was home. I don't like seeing it destroyed the way it is.

Maybe, I shouldn't consider it destroyed, but the land healing itself. The coal mines destroyed the lands around it. The mountain tops were removed and flattened.

We know history repeats itself, and we are bound to see more similar historic events repeat themselves over our lifespans.
